pseudo identity

my focus at this moment is pseudo identity, self branding against reality..
i asked persmission off my friends/ house mates to use them within this project-
i have selected an image that they use of themsleves as a facebook profile; this image is specific to them, it is their way of advertising themsleves.

i wanted to capture how they are in reality. In order to do this I photogrpahed them all in the same area, no special effect or lighting, creating a natural image. All my subjects wern't dressed to go out, they were in a natural stance, as if behind closed doors. In turn i asked them all to ignore the camera & talk to one of my other friends in the room- as if i wasn't there. they all reacted differently: some wern't too sure what to do, some looked away whilst others just saw it as if i didnt exist.

Along with the images, i asked all of them to answer the question, 'What is identity to you?'
I had a variety of responses: some felt the need to produce a dictnary style answer, whilst others were short & vague. I like how they all had to think.
i like the ideas of 'display pictures' hiding the reality behind what individuals are really like..my display picture,i think, portrays a completely different image to how i really am.

diptychs

Created Equal.
Diptychs Depicting the Dichotomy of American Society
the meaning of this word confuses me slightly...& how to pronounce it!! but i think i have managed to grasp it & id like to incorporate it into my themes of identity

Photographer Mark Laita's "Created Equal" is a series of portraits of Americans juxtaposed in rather provocative diptychs.
''I felt the need to produce something that was raw and real, as life truly is, not just what we aspire to''
he photographed contrasting scenes for example a comparision with a church goer and a white surpremisit, a pedophile and a child

i like the contradictory themes and images. i feel i can incorporate this into my own work, i want to look into these themes:
expectations vs realtiy
self branding vs actuality
and focus on the pseudo identity which people portray themselves as

nuns vs prosititutes
gang member vs mafioso

homeless vs real estate developer

Gillian Wearing

Signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what someone else wants you to say- Gillian Wearing

feel her work kind of links with my identity project. i like how she has involved individuals and asked them to say what they want.

FILM

these are films id had developed previously & to link them with my identity i descided to manipulate them. I scratched into the film using a craft knife, cutting into the faces of people i know well, which i found very strange. I cut the faces so their identity was completely lost. When Holding the film up to the light, the results were very clear.
id like to enlarge the images or put them onto a projector to see the full effect.

mirror

i continued the theme of identity using drawings.
i sat in front of a mirror sketching my face in fast movements; i used different drawing materials such as charcoal & graphite.
firstly i drew the right hand side of my face then the left.
ive felt this is a good task to just keep drawing fluent, it also links with identity

felt inspired by dryden goodwin who drew people he saw in his surroundings
